WHO AND WHAT ARE THE SEVEN SPIRITS OF GOD?
(Revelation 1:4 KJV) John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne.
(Revelation 3:1 KJV) And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.
(Revelation 4:5 KJV) And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.
(Revelation 5:6 KJV) And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.
Apart from mentioning the seven Spirits of God, the above verses also tells us some facts about these Spirits. It tell us the following:
- That the seven Spirits of God are before the throne [in heaven].
- That the seven Spirits of God belong to the one which is, and which was, and which is to come [i.e. Jesus]. See Revelation 3:1.
- That the seven Spirits of God are the seven lamps of fire burning before the throne of God [in heaven].
- That the seven Spirits of God are the seven eyes possessed by the Lamb (as it had been slain), sent forth into all the earth.
There has been several misconceptions about the seven Spirits of God with many rejecting that there are actually seven Spirits. They tried to interprete the number seven as completeness, fullness or perfection and argue that there is only one Holy Spirit. They say the seven Spirits of God in the above verses means fullness of the Spirit. Yet the Bible says the Spirits are seven in number. If the Bible says seven it means seven and nothing else.
In order to further comprehend these seven Spirits of God, let us read some passages in Old Testament. Starting from the book of Ezekiel chapter 1, you will notice that the vision by Prophet Ezekiel validates that of John in the book of Revelation.
(Revelation 4:5 KJV) And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.
(Ezekiel 1:13-14 KJV) As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning. And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning.
Notice that the seven lamps of fire are really spirits not just fullness or perfection. They are living creatures. Nevertheless, they appear as lamps of burning fire when they move. They appear as lights or lightning. But they are the spirits of the Lord.
The book of Revelation also tells us that the seven Spirits of God were the seven eyes of the Lamb as it had been slain. In other words, these Spirits were the eyes of the Lord Jesus Christ as when He was in human body sent forth into all the earth. This means that on their own they are like burning lights/lamps but when Jesus possessed them in His human nature, they are like eyes. The book of Zechariah also validates this vision:
(Zechariah 3:9 KJV) For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua; upon one stone shall be seven eyes: behold, I will engrave the graving thereof, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.
From the old testament we also see that in the Tabernacle, the golden candlestick, the menorah (seven-branched candelabrum used in the Tabernacle) is a symbolic representation of the seven Spirits of God.
(Zechariah 4:2 KJV) And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof.
Meanwhile, there are teachings that insinuate that the seven Spirits of God can be found in Isaiah 11:2:
(Isaiah 11:2 KJV) And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.
However, this teachings are not accurate as there are only six Spirits in this verse: the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. These are not supposed to be separated from the Spirit of the LORD.
